Oneofthemostimportantpropertiesduringfilmprocessingismolecularorientation.Thiswilldictatetheultimatefilmcharacteristicsanditcanbechangedwithprocessingvariablesandmeasuredwithexperimentallaboratorytechniques.Thetheoreticaluniaxialorientationprinciplesallowingoneorthethreecrystallographicaxistoorientwithrespecttothestretchingdirectionarewellknown1,2.Typicalmolecularorientationmeasurementsinvolveinfra-reddichroism,birefringence,andX-raydiffraction1,2,however,somemoresophisticatedtechniques,suchasBrilloiunscattering3,haverecentlybeenused.ClaynanocompoundediPP4isarelativelynewpolymericsystemwiththepotentialtobroadentheiPPpracticalapplications.Thereareseveralreportednanocompoundingmethods4,5,6,althoughtwoofthemoststudiedaredirectmixing5,andmixingusingmaleicanhydride6asacompatibilizer.Inthisstudy,wehaveusedinfra-reddichroismandopticalbirefringenceinordertodeterminemolecularorientationofneatandnanocompoundediPP.This,intermsofthemainvariablesinvolvedinalaboratoryuniaxialfilmextrusionmachine,andalsointermsoftwoclaynanocompoundedpreparationmethods.
