Itiswellknownthat[6,6]-phenylC61butyricacidmethylester(PCBM)isthemostcommonn-typesemiconductormaterialusedinpolymersolarcells,andalmostonlyneedle-likecrystallitewithlengthsoftensofmicrometerscanbeformed.Meanwhile,muchworkaboutthepreparationoforderedstructureswithvariedmorphologieshasbeenreportedbytakingadvantageoftheself-assemblyofamphiphilicmolecules.Wewillintroducetheself-assemblyofamphiphilicmoleculesPCBM-PEGsynthesizedbyattachingethyleneglycol(EG)moleculestoPCBM.Duetoamphiphilicnatureofthispolymer,PCBM-PEGcanself-assembleintovariousmorphologiesinselectivesolvent.Wewillpresentasimpleandefficientroutetoproduceuniqueassembliesthroughtheprecipitationmethod.Inatypicalexperiment,PCBM-PEGwasfirstlydissolvedinagoodsolvent,forexampleN,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF);acertainamountofacetonitrile(apoorsolventforPCBM)wasthendroppedintothesolutionwithstingingstirringtoinducetheself-assemblyofthepolymer.Afteragingforseveraldays,uniqueassembliescanbeobtainedbydroppingadropofthesolutiononasiliconwaferundervarioussolventevaporationconditions.Byvaryingtheratioofgoodsolventtotheselectivesolventandthesolventevaporationrate,uniqueaggregateswithvariedmorphologies(e.g.,sphere,doughnut-like,bowl-likeandslice-likestructures)andsizesrangingfrommicronstonanometerscanbeformed.
