Shapememorypolymers(SMPs)havethecharacteristicssuchaslargerecoverability,lightweight,superiormoldingpropertyandlowercost.TheseadvantageshavemadetheSMPsbecomeoneoffunctionalmaterialsinvariousfields.Inthispaper,SMPnanocompositeswithseveralmodifiedcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)aredevelopedandtheiruniquecharacteristics,suchasshapememoryeffect,electroactiveresponseunderdifferentDCvoltages,areinvestigatedforthewiderapplicationsinmechanicalandelectrical/electronicfields.Multi-walledCNTs(d=20一30nm)wereusedasthefiller.ToimprovethedispersionofpristineCNT,radicalreactiontreatmentandothermildhydrothermaltreatmentswereconducted.Mechanicalpropertieswereevaluatedusingtensiletesterandactuatorperformancewasevaluatedbymeasuringthebendingdisplacementofthefilmsusinglaserdisplacementmeter,controller,digitalelectrometerandhigh-voltagepowersupply.Volumeresistivityandpermittivityofthefilmwerealsomeasured.Spacechargemeasurementwasdoneusingpulsedelectroacousticnon-destructivetestsystem.Asaresult,theshapememorypolymer(SMP)basednanocompositesweredevelopedandtheirshapememorypropertiesandelectroactivepropertywereexaminedsystematically.Thecarbonnanotubesasthefillerweretreatedbyradicalreactionandmildhydrothermaltreatment.Then,thedevelopednanocompositeshaveshownagoodmechanicalpropertiesandelectroactiveactuation.Theykeephighstrainrecoveryabilityafterrepetitiveloadingcyclebehaviorandshapememorycharacteristics.Thiswillmakethedevelopedmaterialswhichcanbeutilizedforthecycleapplicationwithanyshapeindailylife.ElectricalpropertiesofdevelopedfilmsofSMP/treatedCNTarediscussedaccordingtothevolumeresistivityandspacechargemeasurementresults.Intheactuationbehavior,thefilmsbenttothecathodesidewhenvoltageisappliedandrevertedtoitsoriginalpositionwhenvoltageisremoved.Themechanismofactuationbehaviorisdiscussed.EachtypeofCNTsmodificationhasuniqueeffectsontheactuatorperformanceofnanocompositefilm,whichwillberespectedforfurtherdevelopmentofactuators.
