Propertiesofnanocompositesdependnotonlyontheindividualbuildingblocks,butalsoontheorganizationandspatialarrangementofindividualblockswithinthehost.Supramolecularpolymersprovidemoreversatileroutestocontrolspatialarrangementofthenanoparticles(NPs)overmultiplelengthscales.WewillintroduceasimpleandversatileapproachfortheencapsulationofNPswithinblockcopolymermicellarcoresthroughdirectedsupramolecularassembly.Typically,polystyrene-poly(4-vinylpyridine)PS-P4VPand3-n-pentadecylphenoI(PDP)weredissolvedinchloroformtoformPS-P4VP(PDP)xcomb-coilsupramoleculesbyforminghydrogenbondingbetweenP4VPandPDP,whichcanfurtherself-assembleintohierarchicalstructures.UponadditionofPS-coatedgoldNPstothehierarchicalsupramolecules,NPswereselectivelyincorporatedintoPScylindricallyconfinedphaseswithinP4VP(PDP)i.omatrices.Isolatedworm-likemicelleswithuniformlydispersedNPswereobtainedthroughremovalofthesmallmoleculePDPbyrupturingthehydrogenbonding.Thisversatileapproachallowsustofinetuneinterparticledistanceandmicellarmorphologybyvaryingthecontentofnanoparticlesand/orhydrogenbondingagentinthesupramolecularassemblies.ThenumberofNPsineachmicellecanbeeffectivelyincreasedbysimplyaddingNPsinthePSdomainsandPDPtoP4VPdomainsimultaneously.LocationandorientationoftheNPscanbetailoredbyvaryingthecontentofNPs,theaspectratiooftheNPs,orthediameterofthecylindricalnano-objects.[3]GenerationoforderedNPsarrayswithsingleparticleprecisionovermacroscopicdistanceswillnotonlyenableabasicunderstandingofthephysicalpropertiesofthismaterial,butalsofabricatenext-generationNP-baseddevices.
