Duetotheiruniqueopticalproperties,photoniccrystaI(PC)microsphereshaveattractedgreatattention.[1]Uptonow,thereareonlyfewreportsonthepreparationofPCmicrosphereswithmultifunctionality.Thus,itstillremainsachallengetogeneratemonodispersemultifunctionalPCmicrosphereswithhighqualityinafastandfacileway.Wewillpresentthegenerationofhydrogelphotoniccrystalmicrospheres(HPCMs)withinverseopalstructurethroughacombinationofmicrofluidicandtemplatingmethod.Monodispersesilicacolloidalcrystalmicroparticlesarefirstlyobtainedthroughmicrofluidictechniqueandsubsequentsolvent-evaporationprocess.TheobtainedcolloidalcrystalmicroparticlesarefirsttreatedbycalcinationtoconnectthesilicaNPs,andthenrinsedwiththeaquaregiasolutiontoinducehydrophilicgroupsonthesurfaceofthemicroparticles.TemperatureandpHresponsiveHPCMsarethenbepreparedbycopolymerizingthefunctionalmonomerssuchasN-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAm)andmethacrylicacid(MAA).HPCMsnotonlycanshowtunablestructuralcoloralmostcoveringtheentirewavelengthofvisiblelightbysimplycontrollingtemperatureorpH,butcanrealizerapidresponserateduetothedecreasedsizeandwell-orderedporousstructure.Moreover,functionalgroupsorsubstancessuchasazobenzenederivativeormagneticnanoparticlescanfurtherbeintroducedintohydrogelmatrixbyusingpost-treatmentprocess.ThesemultifunctionalHPSMscanrespondtotheUV/visiblelightwithoutsignificantlyinfluencingthetemperatureandpHresponse,thusrealizingmulti-responsivecapabilitywithinonesingleparticle.Thepresenceofmagneticnanoparticlesmayfacilitatetheassemblyandhavepotentialinapplicationofadvanceopticaldevices.Also,weusePS-co-PNIPAMnanoparticlestopreparecolloidalPCswithoutdialysisandionexchangeprocessing.Duetothehydrogenbondingamongthenanoparticles,sphericalhydrogelPCscanbeformedinasimilarfashion.Byvaryingthesizeandvolumefractionofthenanoparticles,structuralcolorsoftheHPCMscanbetuned,broadeningtheirapplicationsinthefieldsofsensing,separationandencoding
