Developmentofasuitableandefficientbipolarplatematerialforpolymerelectrolytemembranefuelcell(PEMFC)isscientificallyandtechnicallyimportantduetothecriticaldemandonhigherthermalproperties,higherelectricalconductivityandbettermechanicalpropertiesofthismaterial.Thisresearchaimstostudyelectricalconductivity,mechanicalpropertiesaswellasotheressentialpropertiesofhighlyfilledgraphitecompositesutilizingpolybenzoxazineasamatrix.Thecompositionofgraphitefillerwasachievedtobeintherangeof40%t080%byweight.Theexperimentalresultsrevealedthatatthemaximumgraphitecontentof80wt%or68vol%filledinthepolybenzoxazine,storagemodulusatroomtemperatureofthespecimenwasraisedfrom5.9GPaoftheneatpolybenzoxazineuptoabout21.9GPainthecompositesorabout370%improvement.Theglass-transitiontemperaturesofthecompositeswereobservedtoberangingfrom174t01940Candthevaluessubstantiallyincreasedwithincreasingthegraphitecontentsimplyingsubstantialinterfacialinteractionbetweenthefillerandthematrix.Thermalconductivityashighas10.2W/(m.K)isachievedforagraphite-filledpolybenzoxazineatitsmaximumfillerloading.Waterabsorptionofthisfilledsystemwasrelativelylowwiththevalueofabout0.032%in24hours.Additionally,electricalconductivitywasmeasuredtobeashighas245S/cm.TheobtainedpropertiesofthegraphitefilledpolybenzoxazinecompositesindicatedthevaluesthathighlysatisfiedtheUnitedStatesDepartmentofEnergy(DOE)requirements.Therefore,thesegraphitefilledcompositesbasedonpolybenzoxazinearehighlyattractiveforbipolarplatesinPEMFCapplications.
