Self-dopedTi02nanotubearrays(denotedasSTNTs)forsupercapacitorsapplicationwerepreparedbytreatingtheTi02nanotubearrays(denotedasTNTs)withafacilecathodicreductionprocesstotailoritssemiconductorcharacteristic.TheTNTswerepreparedbyanelectrochemicalanodizationprocessinatwo-electrodesystem.Inshort,cleaned,polishedtitaniummetalstripswereanodizedat20VDCfortwohoursinasolutionof0.5wt%NH4Fand10wt%H20inethyleneglycol.Aftercalcinedat4500Cfor2hrs,theas-preparedTNTswerepolarizedatanegativepotentialintherangesof-1Vto-2Vfor10minutesinathree-electrodesystemusingtheTNTs,saturatedcalomelelectrode(SCE)andPtmeshastheworking,reference,andcounterelectrodes,respectively.Preliminarystudiesindicate-1.4Vistheoptimumappliedpotential.ThestructureoftheSTNTsconsistsofhighlyorderedtubeswithinnerdiameterof50一80nm,wallthicknessof10-15nmandtubelengthofl.8~2ym,whichareinidenticaldimensionwiththatofTNTs.TheXPSpeaksoftheSTNTscenteredatabout458.5and464.3eV(correspondtothecharacteristicofTi2plt2andTi2p3t2peaks)showanegativeshiftcomparedtoTNTsandindicatethepresenceofTi3+intheSTNTs.TheformationofoxygenvacanciesisfurtherconfirmedbytheRamanspectrawiththepeaksoftheSTNTsnegativelyshiftedandbroadencomparedtoTNTssample.Theelectrochemicalpropertiesofthesampleswereinvestigatedwithelectrochemicalimpedancespectroscopy(EIS),cyclicvoltammetry(CV)andgalvanostaticcharge-dischargetestsbyanelectrochemicalworkstation.Asresultsofself-doped,theelectrochemicalactivityandconductivityoftheTi02nanotubearrayswerehighlyimproved.ComparedtopristineTNTs,theSTNTssampledeliversaCVcurveclosetoanidealrectangularshapeandshowsexcellentcapacitivecharacteristic.TheareacapacitanceoftheSTNTsis27timeslargerthanthepristineTNTs.Inconclusion,afacilecathodicreductionmethodwasproposedtointroduceoxygenvacanciesintotheTi02nanotubearrays.Improvedelectrochemicalactivity,higherconductivityandenhancedcapacitanceweredemonstratedfortheself-dopedTNTs.
