Thediscoveryofcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)hasattractedhighinterestsbecauseoftheiruniquemechanical,thermalandelectronicproperties.However,theapplicationofCNTshasbeenlimitedtothefieldofelectronicpackagingandelectricalinsulatingduetotheirexcellentelectricalconductivity.SurfacemodificationofCNTsthusbecomesanimportantmethod,especially,usinginsulatinginorganiclayers.Boronnitride(BN)haslowdensity,highthermalconductivityandchemicalinertness.Inparticularly,boronnitridehasreceivedmuchattentionbecausetheyareinsulating,donotreactwithmoltenmetals,andhavehigheroxidationresistancethancarbon.Thus,combiningtheadvantagesofthetwomaterialswouldbeofgreatvalueforthedesignofnanoscaleelectronicdevicesandnanostructurescomposites.Inthepresentwork,wereportanovelcoatingmethodinvolvingareactionbetweenboricacidandureaonthesurfaceofcarbonnanotubes.TheaimofthisworkistostudytheformationofBNthinfilmsonthesurfaceofMWCNTsbythermaltreatment.Theprocessinvolvesheatingnanotubesinamixtureofboricacid(H3803)andurea,followedbyaheattreatmentat900一10000CunderN2atmosphere.Theproductswerecharacterizedbytransmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM),X-raydiffraction(XRD)andX-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy(XPS)analyses.Theresultsrevealedthatboronnitridewassuccessfullycoatedonthesurfaceofcarbonnanotubeswithdisorderedwallstructure.Theureadecompositionrouteaffordsasimplemethodtocoatboronnitrideonone-dimensionalnanostructures.
