UHMWPEfiberisakindoflightweighthigh-strengthoriented-strandgelspunthroughaspinneret.Theyareusedinarmorforsoldier&policemen,inparticular,personalarmorandonoccasionasvehiclearmor9astheirhighstrengthsandspecificlowgravitycl].RecentlytheUSmilitary‘sinterceptorbodyarmorbasedonUHMWPEfiberisdesignedtoofferarmandlegprotection,whichisnamedasSpectraorDyneemafabricc2,3].However,UHMWPEfibershasextremelylowcoefficientoffriction,itsfrictionperformanceandlowpolaritycauseditdifficulttobondsothatisveryimportanttomodifytheUHMWPEfibre,ssurfaceinordertoincreasebondingabilitywithresins.Thesurfacemodificationofultrahigh-molecularweightpolyethylene(UHMWPE)fiberwasconductedwithaDBDlow-temperatureplasmaapparatus.Theoptimalprocessconditionsweredecidedunderdifferentatmospherebyorthogonalexperimentandwettabilityandcontactangletest.ThechangeofthepropertiesofUHMWPEfiberwasanalyzedbeforeandafterplasmasurfacetreatmentbyadhesiontest,scanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)andX-rayphotonspectroscopy(XPS).TheresultsshowedthattheDBDlow-temperatureplasmayieldsverygoodsurfacemodificationresultunderAr/02andargon-acrylicacidatmosphere.Bylowtemperatureplasmamodificationit,ssurfaceOcontentincreasedfroml.6%t019.6%,that‘smeaningitformedalotofcarboxylandhydroxylgroups.Thiskindofgroupswillgreatlyincreaseit,sbondingability.
