Onlinehybridyarnswerespunwiththreedifferentpolymericmatrices.Dependingonthematrix,tailoredsizingswereappliedandtheresultingmechanicalperformancesofunidirectionalcompositeswereevaluated.Dependingontheemployedchemistry,significantimprovementsinthefibre/matrixbondingwereachieved.Asbasematerialsforthehybridyarnspinning,E-Glass(GF)aswellasPLA,PPandPA6.6(lnge02002D,NatureWorksLLC;HG455FB,BorealisandUltramidA27,BASF)wereused.In-situcommingledhybridyarnsconsistingof204glassand102polymerfilaments,respectively,werespunattheLeibniz-InstitutfurPolymerforschungDresdencl].AschematicofthepilotplantusedforthesetrialsisillustratedinFigurel.Tailoredsizingswereappliedinordertopromotefibre/matrixbonding.FilamentwindingofthehybridyarnsfollowedbycompressionmouldingwasusedtomanufactureunidirectionalcompositeswithaGFweightfractionbetween40and60vol%.ThesuccessfulspinningofGFhybridyarnswithdifferentmatrixpolymersandthehighmechanicalpropertiesofthethereofpreparedunidirectionalcompositesdemonstratethepotentialofthistechnologyforthemanufacturingofsecondaryandprimarystructuralcomponents.EspeciallytheinfluenceoftailoredinterphasesontothebondingbetweenglassfibreandmatrixwasshowntosignificantlyimprovetheinterphaseadhesionstrengthoftheGF/Polymercomposites.
