Aseriesofnovelsynthesisalongwithsol-gelreactionhasbeenpreparedthroughincorporatinginorganicsilicanetworksintotheEPDM(EthylenePropyleneDieneMonomer)rubber.Firstofall,maleationofEPDMwasmodifiedbygraftingmaleicanhydride(MAH)tothepolymerbackbone.Subsequently,ethanolamine,3-aminopropyltriethoxysilaneandglycerinewereaddedtoreactwiththemaleicanhydridegrouptoformgraftedpolyimides,respectively.Astheprimaryinorganicprecursor,tetraethylsiloxane(TEOS)wasincorporatedintothesepolymersunderacidconditiontoformtheorganic-inorganichybrids.TheresultsofFT-IRdiagramshowthegraftingofMAHandN-substitutedmaleimidederivativesofmodifiedEPDMcanbedetectedbytheC=OabsorptionpeakofMAHat1710cm-l.Moreover,theformationoftheSi-O-Sinetworkstructuresontheorganic-inorganichybridsafterincorporationofinorganiccomponentsintoEPDMhavebeenfoundtheabsorptionpeakat1000一1100cm-l.Thethermalpropertiesofthermogravimetricanalysis(TGA)showsthatthe10%weightlosstemperaturesofvariousmodifiedEPDMarehigherthanthatofpristineEPDM.TheresultsoftensiletestsshowthattensilestrengthofmodifiedEPDMincreasesfrom7.6MPa(pureEPDM)t08.9~11.4MPa.Moreover,theelongationatbreakofmodifiedEPDMcanbereachedover500%.Fromthedynamicmechanicanalysis(DMA)studies,itexhibitsbothE,andE"ofthehybridsaremuchhigherthanthatofEPDMmatrix.Mostoftheseorganic-inorganichybridsdisplaybothrigidityandtoughnessduetothenano-reinforcingeffect.
