Newtypesofpolymerhydrogelsandpolymernanocomposites,i.e.,nanocompositegels(NCgels)andsoft,polymernanocomposites(M-NCs),withnovelorganic/inorganicnetworkstructureshavebeenfabricated.BothNCgelsandM-NCsweresynthesizedbyin-situfree-radicalpolymerizationinthepresenceofexfoliatedclayplateletsinaqueoussystemsandwereobtainedinvariousformsandsizeswithawiderangeofclaycontents.Here,disk-likeinorganicclaynanoparticlesactasmulti-functionalcrosslinkerstoformnewtypesofnetworksystems.NCgelshaveextraordinaryoptical,mechanical,andswelling/deswellingproperties,aswellasanumberofnewcharacteristicsrelatingtoopticalanisotropy,polymer/claymorphology,biocompatibility,stimuli-sensitivesurfaces,micro-patterning,etc.TheM-NCsalsoexhibitdramaticimprovementsinopticalandmechanicalpropertiesincludingultra-highreversibleextensibilityandwell-definedyieldingbehavior,despitetheirhighclaycontents.Thus,theseriousdisadvantages(intractability,mechanicalfragility,opticalturbidity,poorprocessingability,lowstimulussensitivity,etc.)associatedwiththeconventional,chemically-crosslinkedpolymericmaterialswereovercomeinNCgelsandM-NCs.
