Well-dispersedgrapheneoxide/crosslinkedpoly(vinylalcohol)(GO/cPVA)andreducedgrapheneoxide/crosslinkedpoly(vinylalcohol)(rGO/cPVA)hybridmaterialswerepreparedbysolutionblendingandcrosslinkingmethods.BoricacidwasusedasthecrosslinkingagenttointroducechemicalbondbetweengrapheneandPVA.InfraredattenuatedtotalreflectionandRamanscatteringtechniqueswereusedtostudytheinteractionswithintheGO/cPVAhybridmaterials.ThedispersionandaggregationstatesofGOandrGOinPVAwerecharacterizedbySEM.TheresultsshowthatGOcanformhydrogenbondorchemicalcrosslinkingwithPVA,whichresultsinamolecular-leveldispersionstateinthePVAmatrix,whilerGOandPVAforminter-layerstackedstructureduetotheweakinteractionbetweenthem.However,bothmentionedstructureshaveremarkablereinforcementeffectonPVAafterPVAmatrixiscrosslinked.Withtheaddingof0.8wt%contentofGO,elasticmodulusandultimatestrengthofcrosslinkedPVAgelareincreasedupt01500%and270%respectively,while1370%and239%areobtainedforrGOhybridmaterials.ThecrosslinkingbetweenGOandPVAsignificantlyimprovesthethermalstability,whilelayerstackedstructureofrGOwithPVAimprovestheglasstransitionpointofthePVAmatrixbecauseofthemovementrestrictionofPVAchains.ThestudiesonGO/cPVApresentfurtherevidencethatdispersionofnanoparticlesandinterfacestructurebetweennanoparitlcesandmatrixareresponsibleforthenatureofthehybridmaterials.
