Throughtheevolutionofmanycenturies,bambooachieveshigherstiffness,strengthandfracturetoughnesscl].Theeminentmechanicalpropertiesofbambooarecloselyrelatedtoitsexcellentmicrostructure[2].Inthiswork,ascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)isusedtoobservethemicrostructureofabamboo.Theobservationshowsthatthebambooisakindofnaturalcellularbiocompositeconsistingofcountlessbamboocells.Thebamboocellsarearrangedwithinterphaseformandparalleltothesurfaceofthebamboo.Morecarefulobservationshowsthateachbamboocellconsistsofbamboo-fiberpliesandorganicmatrix.Thefibersinthedifferentfiberplieshavedifferentdirectionswhichcomposeakindofhelicoidal-columnarmicrostructure.Basedontheobservation,themaximumfiber-pulloutforceofthehelicoidal-columnarmicrostructure,whichisrelatedtothefracturetoughnessofthebamboo,isinvestigatedbasedonitsrepresentativemodel.Theinvestigatedresultsshowedthatthehelicoidal-columnarmicrostructuremarkedlyincreasesthefracturetoughnessofthebamboo.Akindofbiomimetic-bamboocompositeisfabricatedwithaspecialmouldandprocess.Thefracturetoughnessofthebiomimetic-bamboocompositeisexperimentallytested.Itshowsthatthebiomimetic-bamboocompositepossessesmarkedlyhigherfracturetoughnessthanconventionalfiber-reinforcedcomposite.
