Theaggregationofcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)inpolymercomposites[l]makesitthemajordrawback,whichmaypreventefficientstressfromtransferringtoindividualnanotubesandhaveabadinfluenceondemonstratingitsfunction.Sofar,oneofthedominantmethodstofunctionalizeCNTsistointroducecarboxylicacidgroupsontothesurfaceofCNTsvianitricacidoxidationandthenconvertthemintootherfunctionalgroupsifneededc2-3].Itpossessesseveraldisadvantages,suchascorrosionandhighpollution,weight-decreaseofproduct,damageofCNTs.TwokindsoffacilemethodwereappliedtomodifyCNTswithoctamethacrylpolyhedraloligomericsilsesquioxane(POSS).First,byusingtheradicalinitiator,POSScoatedCNTshybridsweresynthesizedunderhomogeneousandheterogeneouspolymerizationsystem,respectively.ThePOSScoatedCNThybridswithuniformthicknesswereobtainedunderthehomogeneoussystem.ThethicknessofPOSSlayercoatedonCNTcanbecontrolledfrom15-25t035-50nm.Second,theCNTsbasedinitiatorofatomtransferradicalpolymerization(ATRP)weresynthetizedbyusingaDiels-AlderreactionbetweenCNTsandfurfuryl-2-bromoisobutyratethatwasobtainedviaesterificationreaction.TheCNTs-initiatorwithcontrolledgraftedcontentbychangingtheconditionsoftheDiels-AlderreactionwasusedtosurfaceinitiatedthepolymerizationofPOSSonCNTssurface.WesucceededincontrollingthethicknessofPOSSwhichisgraftedonCNTsbycontrollingthegraftingdegreeofCNTs-initiator.ThemultifunctionalmoleculescoatedCNTshavebettercompatibilitywithotherpolymermatrixanditprovidesapotentialapplicationforthepreparationofcompositematerials.
