Graphenehasinspiredenormousinterestsinthefabricationoffunctionalpolymercompositesduetoitshighaspectratioanduniqueelectrical,mechanicalandthermalproperties.Torealizethehugepotentialofgraphene,itsfunctionalizationandhomogenousdispersioninhostpolymersneedtobeaddressed.Asaprecursorofgraphene,grapheneoxide(GO)hasbeenusedtopreparefunctionalpolymernanocompositescl-4].Wereportanefficientone-stepapproachtoreduceandfunctionalizeGOduringthein-situpolymerizationofphenolandformaldehyde.TheelectricallyinsulatingGOisconvertedtoconductivegraphenewithphenolasthemainreducingagent.Simultaneously,functionalizationofGOisrealizedbythenucleophilicsubstitutionreactionofepoxidegroupsofGOwithhydroxylgroupsofphenolorphenolprepolymerinthealkalicondition.DifferentfromGOandphenolformaldehyderesin(PF)components,PFcompositesareelectricallyconductiveduetotheincidentalreductionofGOduringtheinsitupolymerization.TheelectricalconductivityofthePFcompositewith0.85vol%GOis0.2S/m,nearlynineordersofmagnitudehigherthanthatofneatPF.Moreover,theefficientreductionandfunctionalizationofGOendowsthePFcompositeswithhighthermalstabilityandflexuralproperties.Suchanefficientinsitupolymerizationandchemicalreductionapproachshowsagreatpotentialforthemassproductionofelectricallyconductiveandhighperformancepolymercomposites.
