Thetoughnessandbrittle-ductiletransitionofrigidandrubberparticlestoughenedthermoplasticpolymerswerestudiedbytheoryandexperiment.Intheory,thetoughnesswasanalyzedbytheenergydissipatedbyparticleandmatrixpolymerduringfracture.Theresultsindicatethattheparticlesizeandparticlecontentdependenceofthetoughnessrelyontheenergydissipatedbyparticleduringfracture.Forrigidparticle,theenergydissipatedbyparticleisalmostzero.Thetoughnessforductilefracturedecreaseswithincreasingparticlecontentforrigidparticletoughenedpolymers.However,forrubberparticletheenergydissipatedbyparticleisveryhighduringfracture.Thetoughnessforductilefractureincreaseswithincreasingparticlecontentforrubberparticletoughedpolymers.Inexperiment,westudiedthebrittle-ductiletransitionofethylene/l-octenecopolymer(POE)toughenedpolyamide6(PA6)atvarioustemperatures.Theexperimentalresultsshowthatthecriticalinterparticledistance(IDc)isindependentofthePOEcontentandthePOEparticlesizeatlowertemperatures,thatis,thetemperatureismuchlowerthanthebrittle-ductiletransitiontemperature(TBDm)ofPA6.Athighertemperatures,however,especiallytemperaturesclosetotheTBDm,theIDcdependsonthePOEparticlesize.ThisindicatesthatWu,scriterionforrubbertoughening,specificallythat"theIDcisamaterialpropertyofthematrix,independentofrubbervolumefractionandparticlesize",isinapplicableathighertemperaturesforthebrittle-ductiletransitionofthePOEtoughenedPA6.
