Theaimofthisstudyistoclarifytheeffectofrelativeinterfacialaffinityontheformationofglassfiber-polyamide6(GF-PA6)networksindifferentpolymermatrices.Thefiber-polymerinteractionwasestimatedbythecontactangleoftheinsituformedmicro-dropsontheGFsurfaceandbytheinterfacialshearstrength(IFSS)betweentheglassfiberandthepolymer.Theself-weldedGF-PA6networkintheternarycompositeswasexaminedviathescanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)anddynamicmechanicalanalysis.ItwasfoundthatarelativelyhighinterfacialaffinitybetweenGFandPA6(apositiveAWA*)isessentialforthepreferentialadsorptionofPA60ntheGFsurface.However,theencapsulationratio,NPA6,aparameterforthepercentageofthePA6phasethatencapsulatesthefiber,whichdependsontheinterfacialtensionbetweenPA6andthepolymermatrix.AsimplifiedtheoreticalanalysiselucidatedthatalowerinterfacialtensionbetweenPA6andthepolymermatrixiseffectivetominimizethetotalfreeenergyintheternarysystembyincreasingNPA6fortheconstructionofastrongerGF-PA6networkthroughoutthepolymer.PolymerviscosityaffectsthekineticprocessofthepreferentialsegregationandthePA6domainsize,whichisanotherfactorthatcausesthevariationinNPA6[1].
