Inthisresearchwork,HDPE/PA6blends(75/25wt%)wereproducedbymeltmixinginalaboratorytwinscrewextruder.Chemicalcouplingagent(PEgMA)andalayeredstructurenanosilicate(montmorillonite(MMT》wereappliedindifferentcontentandtheireffectsonthemechanicalandmeltingproperties,microstructureoftheblendswereexamined.Nanoparticleshadastrongeffectbothonthemicrostructureandthemechanicalpropertiesoftheimmisciblepolymerblendcl].ThedistanceoftheMMTnanolayerscanbeincreasedbymechanicalmilling,thusbetterexfoliationcanbereached,andbetterdispersioninthepolymermatrixinthemeltmixingstep,whichresultsinbettermechanicalpropertiesofthenanocompositeblend.Theeffectofthreemillingtimes(15-30-120s)andadditionofl%一3%ofMMTandPEgMAwereexamined.Tensileandthreepointbendingpropertiesoftheblendsincreasedbyabout20%using3wt%MMTaloneorcombinedwithIwt%PEgMAwhiletheirimpactstrengthdecreased.ThemillingofMMTresultedfurtherimprovementinthemechanicalpropertiesoftheblendcomparedtotheunmilledMMTreinforcedcomposites(tensile:6%~7%,bending:12%~18%).Byincreasingthemillingtime,themechanicalparametersdecreased.Theimpactstrengthdecreasedinallcases.TheflowcharacteristicoftheblendsimprovedbyusingMMT,andfurtherimprovementwasachievedbytheattritionmillingofthenanoclay.Asaconclusion,itcanbestatedthatattritionmillingofthemontmorillonitebeforecompoundinghaspositiveeffectonthemechanicalproperties,butbyincreasingthemillingtimethesecharacteristicsweredecreased.ItcausedpresumablybytheagglomerationoftheMMTparticles.
