Multi-functionalityisthecombinationofdifferentpropertiesinonematerialsoastomakeitsuitablefortheuseinapplicationsinwhichdifferentloadingconditionsmustbesustained.Besidesthemechanicalloadbearingcapacity,otherpropertiessuchasthermalstability,electricalconductivityorwearresistancecanbeofimportance.Inmanycases,polymerbasedcompositesarethematerialofchoice,sincetheycancombinetheintrinsicpropertiesofthepolymers(likelightweight,corrosionresistanceortoughness)withuniquepropertiesoftheirreinforcements(suchaselectricalconductivity,wearresistance,orhighmechanicalstiffnessandstrength.)Thepresentcontributionillustrateshowmulti-functionalitycanbeachievedinreinforcedpolymersandcompositestructures,usingdifferenttypesofpolymermatricesandvariousnano-sizedandmicro-sizedfillers,reinforcementsorcoatings.Besidestheprincipleconcepts,variouscasestudiesarerepresented,illustratingdifferentprocessingrouteshowtoachievevariouspropertycombinationsfordifferentspecificapplications.Thelatterincludehightemperaturethermoplastic-basedcompositesforslidingwearloadedcomponents,carbonnanotube/shortfiberreinforcedthermoplasticsusedforpaintableautomotivefenders,filmcoatedcompositesstructures,inwhichhighstiffnessandstrengthtogetherwithhighsurfaceerosionresistancearerequired(e.g.windenergyrotorblades),electricallyconductivethermosettingcoatingsusedforcorrosionprotectionofmetallicpipelinesystems,andhightemperaturethermosettingcoatingsforreducingslidingfrictionandwearofautomotiveenginepistons,etc.
