Abstract: Polymeric thermal actuators could be produced using a polymer and its clay nanocomposite. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-clay nanocomposite was prepared by melt-processing and the laminates of PMMA and its clay nanocomposite were prepared by hot pressing. The results show that thermal expansion coefficient of PMMA is reduced by clay, and the deflection of the composite beam prepared from the laminates behaves in the way predicted by theory. Such laminates could be used for automatic ventilation, switches or sensors.
