2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane(Bis-GMA)isakindofmostcommonusedbaseresinmonomerfordentalrestoration.DuetothehydrogenbondingbetweenhydroxylgroupsinBis-GMA,theviscosityoftheresinreachesahighlevelthatresultsinalargeamountofdiluentsareintroducedintotheresinsystemtodecreasetheviscosityforbetterapplication.However,anumberofadverseeffectsarecomingwiththediluentssuchasincreasedcuringshrinkage.Substitutinghydroxylgroupswhicharethesourcesofhighviscositymightbeanappropriatewaytoreducetheamountofdiluentsandweakentheaccompaniedadverseeffects.Inthisstudy,thehydroxylgroupsinBis-GMAwerereplacedbyacetylgroups,andtheviscositywasdecreasedfrom820Pa.sto11Pa.ssignificantly.DifferentialScanningCalorimeter(DSC)wasusedforinvestigatingthereactionkineticsofthisnovelmonomer.Theresultsshowedthatthefinalconversionofthemodifiedmonomercanreachnearly85%whilethecorrespondingvalueforBis-GMAisabout75%.
