Understandingthecorrelationamongmolecularstructure,thinfilmmorphologyandphotovoltaicpropertiesofconjugatedpolymerappliedinbulkheterojunction(BHJ)polymersolarcells(PSCs)isofcriticalimportanceindesigninghigherefficiencyphotovoltaicpolymers.Consideringthatfeweffectivemethodsonthecontrolandoptimizationofstructuralorderandmorphologyofphotovoltaicblendsthroughabottom-upapproach,e.g.frommolecularstructuredesigntomorphologymodulationandthustophotovoltaicperformanceenhancement,hasbeeninvestigated,weproposedasystematicmethodologyofachievingstructuralorderandthusrelatedmorphologybymoleculardesignandsyntheticefforts:byextendingtheπ-conjugationareainatwo-dimensionalwayandreleasinggeometryhindrancewhichcouldincreasethepolymerinterchaininteraction,thusenhancingstructuralorder,self-assemblyandcarriermobility.Inourinvestigation,theprimarypolymer,namedasPBDTTT-S,exhibitsnostructuralorderduetothestrongsterichindrancecausedbyitsnon-coplanarsulfonylgroups.FromPBDTTT-StoPBDTDTTT-S-T,theπ-conjugatedareawasextendedinbothverticalandparalleldirections,fromwhichthesterichindranceofsidegroupswasreducedandthustheinter-molecularπ-πstackingwasenhanced.Adistinctiveorderedstructurewithwelldefined(100)and(010)chainregistrationwasobservedbygrazingincidenceX-rayscattering(GIXS)ofPBDTDTTT-S-T.Theincreasedinter-chainπ-overlapareaandorderedpackingstructureofPBDTDTTT-S-Tresultsinagoodholemobilityof2.76x10-3cm2V-1s-1,whichisoneorderofmagnitudehigherthanthatofPBDTTT-S.SolarcellsbyPBDTDTTT-S-Tblendedwith[6,6]-phenylC70-butyricacidmethylester(PC70BM)exhibitsapowerconversionefficiency(PCE)of7.81%,whichis25%higherinefficiencycomparedwiththeoriginalpolymerPBDTTT-S.Moreimportantly,thisworktriedtoestablishafundamentalunderstandingofthecorrelationamongmolecularstructure,thinfilmmorphologyandphotovoltaicpropertiesofconjugatedpolymers,whichprovidesaguidanceformoleculardesignofnewphotovoltaicpolymers.
