THFisoftenusedasagoodsolventforpoly(lacticacid)-poly(ethyleneglycol)(PEG-PLA)copolymers.However,littleattentionhasbeenpaidtopotentialaggregationbehaviorofPEG-PLAcopolymerchainsinaTHFsolution.Thesolubilityparameters(ζ)ofTHF,PLAandPEGare18.6MPa1/2,21.3MPa1/2and19.9MPa1/2,respectively.PEGhasasimilarζwithTHF.ThelargeΔζ(solubilityparametergap)betweenPLAandTHFindicatesthatPLAhasacomparativelypoorsolubilityinTHF.So,inadiluteTHFsolution,thePLAsegmentsinPEG-PLAchainstendtocurlup,resultinginacompactPEG-PLAchainconformation.ThecompactsinglechaincoilofPEG-PLAinaTHFsolutionwillcausedeviationofPEG-PLAmolecularweightsdeterminedbyGPCusingnarrowdispersedPSstandards.WefoundthatthemolecularweightsofaseriesofPEG-PLAcopolymersmeasuredbyGPCweresmallerthanthosecharacterizedby1HNMRmethod.
