Shearthickeningofcolloidaldispersionsisofconsiderablescientificandtechnicalimportance.Additionofpolymerstothecolloidalsurfaceprovidesaneffectivemethodofbothstabilizingcolloidaldispersionsandmodifyingtheirrheologicalbehavior,includingshearthickening.Inthisworkshear-thickeningofPEG-tetheredsilicaspheresinPEG400solventwasstudiedbyrheology.Monodispersesilicaparticlesweresynthesizedwithadiameterof450nmviatheStobermethod.[Methoxy(polyethyleneoxy)propyl]trimethoxysilanewasaddedattheendofStoberprocesstotetherPEGtothesilicaparticles.Figure1showedthatthecriticalshearstressofshear-thickeningbecamelargerandthecriticalviscosityofsuspensionsfirstreducedthenincreasedasthePEGgraftdensityincreasing.Thedeceasedelectronicforce,coupledwiththeincreasedstericrepulsiveforce,wasresponsibleforthischange.Variousingredientsincludinggraftdensity,colloidsizeandsolventpropertywhichaffectedshear-thickeningwillbestudiedindetailinlaterworks.
