Theword“intumescence”comesfromLatin“intumescere”whichmeans“toswellup”.Itdescribeswellthebehaviorofanintumescentmaterial.Whenheatingbeyondacriticaltemperature,itbeginstoswellandthentoexpand.Theresultofthisprocessisafoamedcellularcharredlayeronthesurfacewhichprotectstheunderlyingmaterialfromtheactionoftheheatfluxortheflame.
