About the research group:
Our group is quite multidisciplinary. One of research is on artificial intelligence for materials and manufacturing. The team is led by Dr. Jian Lin, who is currently a tenured Associate Professor in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) and an adjunct professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Biomedical, Biological and Chemical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy. He got his B.S. in Mechanical and Automation Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2007. He then obtained his M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California-Riverside in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Prior to MU, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Rice University under supervision of Dr. James J. Tour from 2011 to 2014. Dr. Lin has published >90 peer-reviewed journal papers in the areas of experimental and computational materials with total citations of > 8300, and he holds 6 issued international patents. Some of his research was featured in National Science Foundation (NSF), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), American Chemical Society (ACS), Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), and Science Daily. He is a recipient of 2015 ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award and 2016 Emerging Investigator of the Journal of Materials Chemistry. He is an endowed Dean William R. Kimel and Mila Kimel Faculty Fellow in Engineering. His research is currently funded by U.S. Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and US Army. About the MU:
The University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri system and was established in 1839 as the first public university west of the Mississippi River. MU is one of the nation''s top-tier R1 institutions by US News and a RU/VH (Research University with very high research activity) by Carnegie Foundation. It is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), composed of 64 leading universities in the North America. The University of Missouri Research Reactor Center is the world''s most powerful university research reactor. MU is one of only six public universities in the US with medicine, veterinary medicine, and law all on one campus. It is located in Columbia, which has consistently been ranked by Money magazine as one of the nation’s top places to live because of its excellent quality of life. It is 2 hour-drive to Saint Louis and Kansas cities which are metropolitan areas.
Career pathway for Ph.D. students: After graduation, the student can possibly land on a position in academic or land a position in manufacturing, consulting/financial industry, software companies. By 2022, Dr. Lin has graduated five Ph.D. students and one postdoc. Right after leaving Dr. Lin’s research group, two of them obtained full professorship positions in China and another two obtained associate professorship positions. One Ph.D. graduate got a tenure-track assistant professorship position in a US university.
