Bell Labs Facts
Bell Laboratories, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies, has been operating continuously since 1925.
The world's leading source of communications technologies, Bell Labs remains one of the world's most prolific invention factories. Its employees have generated more than 40,000 inventions since 1925.
The average home contains at least 25 products that stem from Bell Labs innovations, including phones, TVs, remote controls, VCRs, radios, stereos, CD players, and computers.
Work under way at Bell Labs today is redefining what's possible in communications. In the last few months, Bell Labs announced:
the first all optical router;
software that makes Web content accessible by telephone;
a record for the fastest transmission of data over fiber;
a new material that may be useful for making plastic semiconductor chips;
the most sensitive technology available for pinpointing the location of wireless 911 calls.
Bell Labs played a pivotal role in inventing and perfecting key communications technologies for most of the 20th century, including transistors, digital computers, digital networking and signal processing, lasers and fiber-optic communications systems, communications satellites, cellular telephony, electronic switching of calls, the Unix operating system, the world's most widely used computer programming languages, fault-tolerant software, software-based communication services, speech synthesis and recognition, stereo sound, the fax machine, touch-tone dialing, and modems.
Equally pervasive, though virtually invisible, are Bell Labs' contributions in fields such as quality assurance, data analysis, and operations research. Systems engineering, which originated at Bell Labs in the 1920s, allows today's product developers to assess interoperability, end-to-end performance, the economics of new technologies, and other critical issues.
Thanks to many Bell Labs innovations, Lucent Technologies is a leader in network switching, communications software, optical networking, networking services and support, communications integrated circuits, optoelectronic components for communications, wireless network equipment, and many other areas.
Bell Labs has become a global R&D with approximately 16,000 employees spread across more than a dozen countries.
多相流动力学研究联盟 (MFDRC: Multiphase Fluid Dynamics Research Consortium)
【组织简介】
The Multiphase Fluid Dynamics Research Consortium (MFDRC) was established in 1998 in response to priority research needs identified in the Vision2020 Computational Fluid Dynamics Roadmap. To better uderstand and model multi-phase flows, consortium members joined together to support learning and fundamental research. This partnership in basic engineering science will have broad impacts on chemical industry processing and future products. Members include Chevron Texaco, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, DuPont, ExxonMobil, and Millennium Chemicals, the engineering software companies Fluent and AEA Technology, seven universities, and six national laboratories. R&D is jointly funded by DOW Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, DOE Office of Fossil Energy, the National Science Foundation, and participating companies.
杜邦公司的科学研究 (DuPont Science and Technology)
【简介】
DuPont guides the research process thoughtfully and responsibly to maximize outcome and minimize risk. Tom Connelly, Senior vice president of Science and Technology, leads DuPont research direction and focus. Through his leadership and vision, DuPont R&D matches the rapid pace of business markets today. It attracts and retains expert personnel with the fervent desire and intellectual means to make a difference. It is moving closer to the marketplace, bringing products to market faster, entering and considering collaborations with other institutions to leverage knowledge and skills, and seeking new global markets and applications. This vibrant R&D process unfolds at several forums within DuPont: the Corporate Technology Council, Central Research and Development and DuPont Engineering.
The Corporate Technology Council
The Corporate Technology Council is the forum for the technical leaders of DuPont to meet monthly and share ideas and thoughts on integrating technology into new markets, new businesses or new products. Comprised of the technical directors in each of the businesses and research functions in the company, The Corporate Technology Council shares information and works to identify opportunities that may lie between businesses. The council sponsors the Lavoisier Medal for Technical Achievement, an annual award that marks the lifetime achievement of scientists or engineers. The scientists and engineers must have a career of accomplishments or technical and creative contributions that have measurable business impact, technical achievement of enduring significance, a career of significant accomplishments and are a role model for current employees.
Central Research and Development (CR&D)
Prolific research emerges from the Central Research and Development (CR&D) group. This team of more than 1,500 professionals works on discovery research and technologies — some of them based on integrated science, others based on one of the companys traditional disciplines — to meet market needs. Discoveries in CR&D have led to new products such as ink jet inks. CR&D also provides leveraged scientific services for existing businesses within DuPont. The group spearheads both critical functions at one of the worlds largest and preeminent R&D facilities: the DuPont Experimental Station, and supplements those pursuits at Shenzhen, China.
DuPont Engineering Technology (DuET)
DuPont Engineering Technology, known as DuET, develops marketable research ideas into full-scale products and technologies. With world-class skills, personnel, resources and equipment, DuET ably provides the company — and its global customers — with product and process optimization support. Whether the technology or product is used outside the company, or is in development within DuPont, DuET assists expertly.
