The general gel-spinning solution concentration for UHMWPE fibers is only about 5-8 wt%, which results in high manufacturing cost of UHMWPE fibers. In this experiment, UHMWPE fiber was gel-spun from 16 wt% UHMWPE solution. The extracting dynamics of gel fibers were investigated with xylene as extracting agent and drawing process of extracted fibers were studied. The structure and performance of UHMWPE fibers in the drawing process were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the tensile tester. The results showed that the optimum extraction time and bath ratio for 16 wt% gel fiber was 2 minutes and 20 ml/g, respectively. The solvent in gel fiber could be effectively removed by 3 times extraction under the optimum extraction conditions. The melting temperature and the crystallinity of extracted fiber were both higher than that of gel fiber. With the increasing of drawing ratio of UHMWPE fibers, the melting temperature and crystallinity of fibers gradually increased, the crystal size decreased and the final strength of fibers were enhanced. The tensile strength of resultant UHMWPE fiber was 26.5cN/dtex. |
