Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers have excellent mechanical properties, but the fibers’ surface adhesive properties are very poor, which greatly limits their application in the composite materials. This article mainly studied the effect of corona discharge plasma treatment on the surface adhesive properties of UHMWPE fibers. The effects of treating time, power and atmosphere on the surface adhesive and mechanical properties of UHMWPE fibers were studied and the optimum treating condition was got. The results showed some oxygen-based groups were introduced into the surface of UHMWPE fibers and some grooves occurred on the fiber surface after corona discharge plasma treatment. Argon plasma treatment produced more severe eroding on surface than under air plasma treatment. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between treated fiber and PU matrix increased with increasing of treating time and decreased again after a certain time treated. The optimum treating power and treating time for argon and air plasma treatment were both 5W and 60 seconds, the IFSS between treated fiber and PU matrix increased by over 100% without obvious damage on their mechanical properties. |
