In this paper, using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as surface modifiers, the modified ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers were made after the gel fiber extracted with the MWNTs/xylene compound extracting agent and followed by drying and multi-stage hot drawing. The surface morphological structure and thermal properties of pure UHMWPE fiber and MWNTs/UHMWPE fibers were characterized with scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetry (TG) analysis and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The mechanical and adhesive properties of MWNTs/UHMWPE fibers were measured and compared with pure UHMWPE fiber. The results showed that the MWNTs were introduced into the surface of UHMWPE fiber after the extracting treatment. The fiber’s melting temperature and its decomposing temperature at 5% weight loss increased from 144.6℃ to 144.8℃ and 430.5℃ to 450.1℃, respectively. The tensile strength of the fiber increased a little after MWNTs modification, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the modified fiber and epoxy matrix increased by 48.3%. |
