Heterocyclic aramid fiber is one of high temperature resistant fibers. The thermal decomposition behaviors of the fiber in inert gases and air were studied by using Pyrolysis/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Py/GC-MS) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis-Differential Thermal Analyzer/Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (TGA-DTA/FTIR). Py/GC-MS was used to detect instantaneous thermal stability and volatile fragments, and the rupture process of molecular chain was recorded. TGA-DTA/FTIR was applied to detect the continuous heating processes, and the weight loss and volatiles illustrating the chemical reactions during the decomposing of heterocyclic aramid fiber. It was found that at the temperature of 900°C, heterocyclic aramid fiber kept the residues of 60.8% in inert gas and almost lost all mass in air, and oxidation had great effects on mass loss. In both inert gas and air, the main products of thermal degradation were the low molecular volatiles and CO2 was of the largest fraction. |
