To improve the interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrix, silane coupling agent was applied to the surface treatment of carbon fibers with different concentrations. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composite samples were characterized by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The results showed that the mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were improved in the case of silane-treated composites compared with those as received and the ILSS were improved by 23% in a maximum value in the presence of 0.8 wt%. The SEM results of fracture surfaces of composites indicated that the coupling agent plays an important role in improving the adhesion at interfaces between the carbon fibers and epoxy. |
