Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been reported to significantly reduce the flammability of polymers at very low loading level.[1] Owing to the excellent carbonization and flame retardancy, many intumescent flame retardants have been developed to enhance the flame retardancy of polymers. Thus, we try to functionalize the CNTs with intumescent flame retardant (IFR) with the aim of improving the dispersion of CNTs in polymer matrix and expecting a synergistic effect on the flame retardancy and other properties. The decoration of CNTs were through a three-step process, namely, carboxylation or hydroxylation of purified CNTs, preparation of active intermediates and grafting IFR onto CNTs. TEM images showed the sizes and morphologies between CNTs and its derivatives, which provided direct evidences for the functionalization of IFR onto CNTs.[2,3] |
