Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were prepared by melt spinning using a specific plasticizer, which would be used as precursors for the manufacture of carbon fibers. The fibers prepared at different draw ratios were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and mechanical properties testing. SEM images indicated the as-prepared PAN fibers were round without skin-core structure. The mechanical properties of PAN fibers were strongly dependent on the draw ratios; the crystallinity and orientation of PAN fibers highly increased with the increase of draw ratios. Hence, through such proper stretching process, the as-prepared fibers could used as precursors for the manufacture of carbon fibers, which was beneficial for the production of high-property and low cost carbon fibers. |
