Phase synergism and admirable structure in the symbiotic system of cobalt phosphides are realized via simple mechanochemical method combined with heat treatment. Prepared cobalt phosphides as negative electrode materials for lithium ion batteries possess high capacity retention, excellent cycle stability and outstanding stability on long-term cycling. A specific capacity of 907 mAh g?1 at 0.2 A g?1 is retained after 100 cycles. An amazing capacity retention of 91.49% of its 3rd-cycle capacity is gained after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g?1.
