Coalesced-Droplets Transport to Apexes of Magnetic-Flexible Cone-Spine Array

The magnetic-responsive cone spine (MCS) array, where the coalesced-droplets transport to apexes of each MCSs, rather than the bottom (larger diameter) of cone spine that was reported previously. In this study, the microcone spine is covered with nanohairs, and the low adhesion gradient can be induced thereby along MCSs. It is demonstrated that the coalesced droplets realize unidirectional transport from the bottom to apex of MCS, which differs from traditional cone spines without nanohairs with hydrophilic or hydrophobic ones. The gradient of adhesion along MCS can be revealed to be attributed to the nanohair structures effect on microcone spine due to curvature difference in solid–liquid interface. It is revealed that the effective transport of coalesced droplets is related to the apex angle of cone spine and magnetic-responsive tilt-angles of MCS. In addition, the MCS can be dynamically responded by magnetic action for coalesced-droplet transport in efficiency. This study may help to develop a novel way to design a functional surface with a fluid-controlled ability.
