【简介】 Process Engineering is concerned with all techniques aimed to the physical and chemical transformation of matter. Its viewpoint is that of the industrial implementation of the technology, which implies a clear understanding and control of the scale-up process from the laboratory to the pilot to the production plant. Two main subareas are classically identified, i.e., Thermal and Mechanical Process Engineering, but a new one is rapidly emerging, which is Bio-Process Engineering and is mainly concerned with down-stream processing and equipment design for bio-reactions and separations.
The main goal of the research activity of the institute is the development of more efficient, safer, less environmentally harmful, more sustainable processes. Moreover, new techniques are investigated for the development of new products and new preparations to match the new requirements of our society. Some examples of the former group are chemical or biological processes for the down-stream treatment of waste air, waste water or sewage sludge, fluidized bed technology and clean separation processes based on chromatography. Examples from the latter product-oriented group are new processes for cell encapsulation, plasma enhanced coating, synthesis of fibers and ultra fine drug particle crystallization. Processes are investigated not only in terms of their sequence of transformation in fact, on the one hand also the design of special equipment is developed and on the other hand the issue of system integration is addressed.
The research activity at the Institute of Process Engineering has tight links with industry, in particular equipment and plant design, chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.
