Hydrolysis of three polymerizable alkoxysilanes, i.e. vinyl tri(β-methoxy) silane (A172), vinyl triethoxy silane (VTES) and γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (A174) under different pH was characterized. Results revealed that A172 was more quickly hydrolyzed at all tested pH than the others. For the other 2 alkoxysilanes, hydrolysis was pH dependant, and the lowest hydrolysis was observed around pH 8. Using these two alkoxysilanes, ambient temperature self-crosslinking acrylic latexes were prepared through emulsion polymerization with pH controlled around 8. Dependences of the latex and polymer properties on these siloxanes and on their incorporated amounts in the polymers were studied. Latex films were prepared after the latexes were adjusted to low or high pH in order to accelerate the hydrolysis of the alkoxy groups on the latex particles, so that to achieve high crosslinking in the latex films. Properties of the polymers were significantly enhanced with incorporation of VTES and A174. |
