Application of mullite was limited due to poor sintering ability, porosity and less dense. The addition of sintering aids is to improve microstructure, densification and performances of mullite. In this study, Mullite sol and boehmite sol were prepared by sol-gel method from an aqueous solution of aluminum nitrate (AN), aluminum isopropoxide (AIP) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and boehmite was used as sintering aid to improve sintering ability of mullite. Dried and heated mullite sol added boehmite sol was characterized by DSC-TG, Fourier infrared spectroscopic, and density testing. More amorphous structure was formed which is conducive to densification for mullite, and density testing proved that. The boehmite content (5 wt%) yielded maximum density of 98% theoretical density (3.01 g/cm3). |
