Observations of the behavior of electrospun nanofibers show that electrospinning provides ways for incorporating many different kinds of substances into textile yarns for use in clothing or other applications. Nanofibers can be spun from solutions of two or more polymers which may contain dispersed particles such as carbon black, biological cells, or organelles. The design of structures that depend upon polymer nanofibers is a new chapter of engineering that presently encompasses filters, wound dressings, hierarchical carbon nanofiber electrodes, and leads to many other useful products. Advances in electrospinning technology for scale-up and process control are based on new capabilities for measuring jet velocity, jet diameter, and the instantaneous path of the jet. |
