Fe decorated C60 (C60-Fe) is facilely prepared through a simple solution reaction, aiming at enhancing the thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of polymers. Transmission electron micrographs (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) observations indicate that Fe has successfully reacted with C60. The hybrid is introduced into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) by melt compounding to investigate the effect of C60-Fe on the thermal and thermo-oxidative stability of HDPE. The results of thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that the addition of C60-Fe makes the thermal degradation temperatures increase, the oxidative induction time (OIT) dramatically extend. Low C60-Fe loading (5 wt%) in HDPE can increase the onset degradation temperature in air from 352 to 422 oC and delay the OIT from 4.5 to 47.8 min. Meanwhile, the data obtained from microscale combustion calorimetry  (MCC) illustrate that C60-Fe can also improve the flame retardant properties of HDPE.
