This review summarized the recent advancements in major mono/hybrid micro/nano multiscale strategies to toughen C/Cs or/and coatings. The present demanding applications of micro/nano multiscale strategies, especially ceramic NWs, whiskers and CNTs, in C/Cs or/and coatings could improve the toughness of coatings and the C/C matrix via reducing the number and dimension of cracks and preventing their propagation, thus greatly improving the oxidation, thermal shock, and ablation resistance of C/Cs without decreasing the compactness. These reinforcing routes show effective strengthening and toughening effects and are attractive for further investigation, suggesting that they potentially have a bright future in the developing high technologies applied in extremely harsh environments. This review is concluded with an outlook of major unsolved problems, challenges to be met and possible solutions, and future research advice for C/Cs with excellent comprehensive mechanical-thermal performance.
