The porous polymer microspheres with rosin moiety were prepared by suspension polymerization, using an ester (RH) of rosin and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, along with styrene (St) as monomers, divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross-linking agent, gelatin as the dispersing agent, and azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The effects of types and levels of porogen on the porous microsphere were investigated and characterized by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Four methods were used to treat polymer microsphere in order to produce the pores on the surface of the polymer microsphere which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), SEM and weight loss. The adsorption of the polymer microsphere for phenol solution was investigated at different concentration of phenol and time. Experimental results show that when the fixed mass ratio of RH, St and DVB was 1:1.5:0.4, the amounts of gelatin, AIBN and porogen were 4.0, 1.0, and 50 wt %, based on the total weight of mixed monomer, respectively, the porous polymer microsphere was prepared successfully. Alkali-acetone hydrolysis followed by Soxhlet acetone extraction produced more pores on the surface of the polymer microsphere. When the concentration of phenol solution was about 20 mg/L, the porous polymer microspheres made from using toluene and liquid paraffin (1/9, by volume) as porogen exhibited the best adsorption for phenol solution, which superior to that of actived carbon. The adsorption of phenol increased with the adsorption time and phenol concentration.
