This review presents a broad discussion on the photochemical activation reaction of C-H bonds at organic polymeric surfaces, thus providing an organized and detailed overview of the state of the art. The importance of polymer surface/interface properties has been recognized in modern science and technologies, including but not limited to energy, catalysts, biomedicine and optoelectronics. Since a major component on such synthetic material surfaces/interfaces is C-H bonds, the most fundamental chemistry to functionalize and tailor polymer surface properties involves the development of new chemical reactions directly transforming inert C-H bonds into desired chemical structures. To date, academic and industrial communities have expressed a continually increasing interest in this topic and achieved step-by-step versatile approaches toward this destination. Among various techniques, the photochemical transformation reaction is especially outstanding because of its unique advantages over other methods including ultrafast speed, clean reaction route, high efficiency, selectivity and easy patterning. This review describes a number of photo-based strategies that have been employed to chemically activate organic C-H bonds on organic polymer surface, and some examples on self-assembled monolyer, lipid membrane as well as carbonaceous material surface are also included.
