Mr. Wang Daming is awarded the Second Prize in National ‘Challenge Cup’

          Under the guidance of Professor Yang Guang, the project undertaken by Wang Daming ---‘Creation of Biomimetic Magnetic Microorganism’--- was awarded the First Prize in Hubei Provincial ‘Challenge Cup’. Moreover, after severe selecting, he represented our Huazhong University of Science and Technology to participate in National ‘Challenge Cup’, and won the Second Prize eventually.

           This innovative project by means of ‘Biomimetic mineralization’ aims at constructing a mineralized sedimentary sequence on the surface of microorganism cells. With this “scaffold”, ferroferric oxide magnetosome is able to be incorporated into the mineralized sequence and be attached to the cell surface firmly, thereby producing microorganism cells with magnetic response, which have universality. Its significance lies in the combination of biological functions of different microorganism and the operability of magnetic field. Therefore , it has potential to establish a new method of controlling the motion of microorganism, which can be applied in process control of biomanufacturing to design some novel micro/nano materials and devices. Actually, it has been never reported in biomanufacturing field.

           The biomimetic microorganism created by this method will have a broad and promising application in Biology, Chemistry, Polymer, Material, Bioengineering, Microorganisms Metallurgy, National Defense, Information and many other important fields of Research or Industry. In addition, such method of biomanufacturing based on microorganism will significantly extend the types and application ranges of biomass materials, thereby exerting profound influence on promoting the development of new bio-based Economy. Moreover, it is a green technology to manufacture materials by employing bacteria for its lower resource consumption and eco-friendly processes; therefore, it can be imagined that the establishment of this technology would play a pivotal role in optimizing the progress of science and technology and constructing harmonious society.That’s to say, this method has good social efficiency.
