Natural fiber(NF) reinforced poly(lactic acid)(PLA) composites have received a lot of research attention because of their excellent biodegradablity. However with
the addition of the flame retardancy, the properties of the composites such as the mechanical properties are greatly decreased. Poly(butylenes adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is an aliphatic-aromatic copolyester, which is fully biodegradable. In the view of its high toughness and biodegradability, PBAT is considered as a good candidate for the toughening of PLA matrix. In the present study , jute /poly(lactic acid)/poly(butylenes adipate-co-terephthalate) (jute/PLA/PBAT) composites were prepared by twin-screw extruder and two-roll mill. Ammonium polyphosphate was used as flame retardancy. The effect of PBAT on the properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites were studied.
Flammability and melt stability of the composites were thoroughly evaluated by means of limiting oxygen index(LOI) measurement, 60 second vertical burn test,
and thermogravimetric(TG) analysis. The results showed that with the addition of PBAT, the composites can get comparatively better mechanical properties and
flammability properties.
