The
current energy shortage and environmental pollution has received people''s
attention to green and sustainable materials. Jute and poly(lactic acid)(PLA),
as biodegradable materials, have biodegradability and abundant renewable
source. Nature fiber reinforced PLA composites are more and more used to
replace the petroleum-based composite. So the study on the durability of
jute/PLA composites can provide a reference for service life of this kind
products. In order to assess the durability of jute fiber reinforced
poly(lactic acid)(PLA) composite, the material was set in the deionized water
baths at three different temperature including 23oC, 37.8oC, 60oC. The change
of moisture absorption and mechanical properties of jute/PLA composites with
the increase of the aging time was investigated. In addition, the samples were
also analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), differential scanning
calorimetry(DSC), thermal gravity(TG). The study showed that in the first stage
of hydrothermal aging, the water absorption rates of the jute/PLA composite was
according with the Fickian''s law. In the second stage it was deviated. The
water absorption rate increased with the increase of aging temperature in the
first stage. The mechanical properties, such as flexural properties, tensile
properties decreased at different degrees with the increase of aging time.
Aging mechanisms of jute/PLA was also investigated.
