With the growing environmental awareness and shortage
of natural resource, biodegradable and compostable materials are produced and
used in increasing amounts in the areas of life and industry. The composites
made by natural fibers and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) have been used for making automotive parts and building
components etc. However, the poor interfacial adhesion between natural fibers
and the PLA matrix limits their widely utilization.
In
this study, the
composites
with ramie as the reinforcement and PLA as the matrix were prepared by twin-screw extruder. Alkali, isocynate, silane and maleic anhydride (MA) were
used to modify ramie fiber, and the influence of surface modification
on the properties of ramie fiber reinforced
PLA composites was studied. The tensile properties, flexural properties and
impact properties were investigated and the morphology of fracture surface
of the composites evaluated by scanning
electronic microscopy (SEM). Through the comparison of the performances of the
composites with different surface modification,
the optimal surface modification for ramie/PLA composites was concluded.
