Ramie as a kind of natural fibers reinforced poly(lactic acid)(PLA) composites have received a lot of research attention because of their excellent biodegradablity.
However, poor flammability of the composites limited the application of the composites such automobile and aircraft interior area.
In the present study, 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) was incorporated into the ramie fiber reinforced composites. Flame retardancy of the comp osites was greatly improved according to the UL94 vertical test and limiting oxygen index measurements. Enhanced char yield at higher temperatures was observed according to the TGA results. The influence of DOPO on the mechanical properties of the composites was also studied.
